Mick: Academic Training committee has emphasized that it expects the summer student lecture series and the Fall Academic Training Lectures to be recorded. John Ellis very strongly wanted to join Draper’s committee, which is set up to review the issues around archiving media on the web. Mick wondered where the critical mass to take this on operationally existed.

Concern for network congestion: Mick asked about network activity from the web. Jarek described the recently purchased new server with 150 GB mirror space for web archive (this can be tripled for about 8000 CHF). Currently there is a total of 20 GB of archived material. The server is set to accept 100 users at the same time. They can purchase up to 500 or 600 users.

Ultimate use of the CERN network is for the transfer of physics data. If we increase traffic to the point that it is detected, we could conceivably be asked to shut down the operation. Jarek’s examination of our network traffic currently indicates that we aren’t greater than background noise. Mick was happy with this; he just wanted to be sure we were prepared for the argument. For the future of network congestion, as the database gets larger and demand concurrently gets larger, Chuck said that the Lecture Object design could relieve this by moving video to mirrored servers and using dynamic RAM (this is how sites like “CNN” handle video-on-demand).

Mick brought up the subject of merging together the various development efforts into a cohesive whole. This reduces the manpower to record via the various methods. Chuck thought trying to merge activities of, for instance, VRVS and Clipboard would be like “putting two cats in a bag.” The development is too early on any of the products to begin figuring out how to have them share the same domain.

Question: Does Rita use existing videotape from Daniel’s group or do Web University record separately?
