- Production Switch Change Protocol
Production Switch Change Protocol
Define critical changes:
-
New hardware: switch/router/hub added not on current configuration diagram
-
Modification involving spanning-tree anywhere
-
Upgrade of firmware or running image on any switch/router
- Change static routes
Define configuration changes (Note: how do you define
change for each of these?)
-
Change port configuration
- Change VLANs
-
Change IGMP for multicast
-
Change device(s) connected to ports
-
Classify as Critical or Configuration
-
Critical
--- Requires approval from OCS, with possible additional
scheduling with UMNet
-
Send email notification to
physics.ocs@umich.edu
and
phys.comp.comm@umich.edu
announcing upgrade window at least 72 hours in advance or, if emergency, get
approval from OCS. Acceptable times for such changes are M-Th, 8am-4pm. No
critical changes on Fridays, weekends, holidays or evenings
(4pm-8am).
-
Remove switch/router from network, if possible
-
If network connectivity is required to make the change, must remove our switch
block from the network. (unclear what this means)
-
If network isnt required, isolate switch/router by
physically disconnecting
cabling to outside. Merely disabling cables/ports is not enough -
they must be physically disconnected.
-
Perform Critical change
-
Local testing to verify status
-
Reconnect to network, if disconnected
-
Send email notification of completion to
physics.ocs@umich.edu
and
phys.comp.comm@umich.edu
detailing the change and verification results
-
Update network diagram and forward to OCS
published on WWW at a server of
Shawn and Erics choosing (their server).
-
Configuration
Changes to switch or router to fix or augment performance or
security or to add new capability
-
Send email notification to
physics.ocs@umich.edu
announcing proposed changes and time with as much advance warning as
possible. Time window should be off-hours?
-
During time window, perform configuration changes
-
Monitor network
test to verify status
-
Send email notification to
physics.ocs@umich.edu
announcing completion of task and verification results
